Focus Features Picks Up PTA's Fashion Film, Production to Begin Early Next Year

Via Deadline, Focus Features and Universal Pictures have secured international rights to Paul Thomas Anderson's forthcoming, still untitled fashion drama starring Daniel Day-Lewis!

The project is expected to start shooting early next year and release late next year, with Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures still on board to produce. The report also makes an update about the movie: it will actually be set in the 1950s fashion industry of London, rather than early reports stating it would be set in New York.

We're expecting news to start dropping a bit more precipitously now, so do keep checking back for more info as it becomes available. Folks... looks like this thing is really happening!

  1. Definitely excited but the fashion industry in general seems pretty hacky to write about and even worse to watch, hoping PTA reverses my thoughts on that

    1. There are excellent docs about fashion, FYI.

  2. Hmm... PTA's films have always been distinctly American so it will be interesting to see him do a film set in London.

    1. That's a good point, isn't The Master the only one that even sets foot outside the USA? And also the only that makes it further east from Cali than New Mexico? ;D

    2. The Master was interesting because it did trot around the country a bit. There are some scenes on the east coast, for example they go to a dinner party in New York, and then to Laura Dern's house in Philadelphia. It could be argued that it doesn't go outside of the country though, because many see the scene with Freddie visiting England as a dream sequence. Also, Barry goes to Hawaii in Punch Drunk Love, so his films do explore the US a bit even though most of them take place in Southern California. I always saw his films as a whole as sort of a surreal rumination on what it means to be an American, and being explorations of that theme all throughout the 20th century. But perhaps as he's maturing his interests are changing, and maybe Junun is an indication of him developing more of an interest in global themes.

    3. Also, as far as "surreal rumination on what it means to be an American" goes, where the hell is he supposed to go after Inherent Vice?

  3. Andrew... You don't know what you're talking about. Any subject incredibly well handled will be interesting. I'm not a big fan of knights in dirty armor, of dragons, and imps ..: yet Game of Thrones has completely won me over. It is as big as Shakespeare. PT Anderson has only made one mistake in his career… And that was "Inherent vice" ... Everyone of his other movies have been brilliant. So what are you worried about?

    1. Well Mr Kubrick I'm definitely excited but it does reek of Oscar reaching, I mean you can already see Costume nominations and DDL winning without even seeing a frame. So I just don't want it to be a simple Oscar movie about the fashion industry. I'm guessing it won't be but still seems very conventional for PTA

    2. to be fair, any time DDL is in a movie you can't help but assume he'll be nominated or win an oscar.

    3. knowing his other films I don't think it will be "a simple oscar movie", I think it will be more like the master, with both being 70mm, and I think it will have more to say about capitalism and greed like there will be blood. I find your comment that his only mistake being inherent vice interesting, cause to me it is just as large and complex as his other films and in a way just as serious, but it is focused more as a comedy like punch drunk love, but yet everyone seems to think vice was just out of the blue for him.

  5. Are Tarantino and PTA ever going to make another film based in contemporary times?
