Inherent Vice

THE PLOT

"Inherent Vice," is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel.

When private eye Doc Sportello's ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a looney bin... well, easy for her to say.

It's the tail end of the psychedelic 60's and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that "love" is another of those words going around at the moment like "trip" or "groovy" that's being way too overused - except this one usually leads to trouble. With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists. Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp - all Thomas Pynchon.

2/7/13
Costume designer Mark Bridges tells us he's been looking at the star-studded 1968 film "Candy" as an inspiration for the film which he's already started work on. "There’s a film called “Candy” [a 1968 satire starring Marlon Brando, Richard Burton, Walter Matthau, John Huston, James Coburn, Ringo Starr and Charles Aznavour] -- as well as other films that I’ve been looking at -- that are satires but they’re broad and they have very iconic people in them. So I’m playing with that idea in my mind, whether that’s something that Paul’s going to want to latch onto, [I’m not sure]."

2/6/13
Philip Seymour Hoffman says he won't be in the film marking the second time the actor has sat out a PTA film (the other being "There Will Be Blood").

12/27/12
PTA tells the NY Times he hopes to shoot 'Vice' in 2013, says it will be a more faithful adaptation than "There Will Be Blood."

10/12/12
PTA tells Sirius XM that the hardest thing about the adaptation is turning 400 great pages from the book and turning them into 100-120 script pages.

9/3/12
PTA compares 'Vice' to "a 'Cheech & Chong' movie," says he hopes to film it next.

2/19/11
Rumors swirl that 'Vice' might film first due to a Fall opening in Downey Jr.'s schedule.

2/11/11
Both "The Master" and "Inherent Vice" reportedly get financing from Annaupurna Pictures. It's unclear which film will lense first.

12/2/10
Project is first announced. PTA has already begun adapting the Thomas Pynchon novel with the author's approval. Robert Downey Jr. is supposedly interested in the lead, stoned P.I. "Doc" Sportello.

  1. Would really like to see Aunt Reet played by either Margot Martindale or Kathy Bates (ala PRIMARY COLORS) - those are who I picture in that role... maybe Melissa Leo

  9. Just finished reading the book and gotta tell you though the cast has already been set .... the role of Sportello's got Johnny Depp's name written all over it from cover to cover . The book itself is like reading a movie to the point it would of been silly not to make it into an actual movie .

  11. According to IMDB,
    Martin Donovan is Crocker Fenway
    Andrew Simpson is Riggs Warbling
    Serena Scott Thomas is Sloane
and Christopher Allen Nelson is playing "Glenn" which can only be Glenn Charlock (there's only one Glen in the whole book).

  12. And Jena Malone is portraying Hope Harlingen, good choice. I hope that PTA give her enough screentime cause she's a star.

  13. Yes, Jena Malone my favourite actress playing in a PTA-movie is great, she always brings something special to her character. She plays for the 2nd time Hope. The first time she played it she got nominated for a Golden Globe but unfortunately she didn't win it.
